LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mykeema Ford scored a season-high 21 points and Jessica Smith added her 20th career double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Stony Brook women's basketball team to a 65-56 victory over Bucknell Tuesday evening at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison were led by a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds from freshman Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican).
Stony Brook (7-4), which defeated Bucknell 81-72 in November, opened up a 10-0 lead as the Bison missed their first eight shots. A running floater by Kristina Collymore (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) nearly seven minutes into the contest marked the first field goal for Bucknell, which fell to 6-6 with the loss. The Bison would draw to within eight on just two other occasions during the first half as the Seawolves entered halftime with a 34-19 edge. The 15-point spread was the second-largest halftime deficit this season for Bucknell.
Smith scored eight straight points to open the second half as Stony Brook stretched its lead to a game-high 20 points at 42-22. The junior forward scored 10 of the Seawolves' first 11 points in the second half.
The 20-point deficit was the largest of the game for Bucknell, which narrowed the gap to 54-45 on a short jumper by Schober with just under six minutes to play. From there, the two teams traded baskets as the Bison closed to within eight points four times, but never trailed by more than 11. Stony Brook, which shot 20 of 25 from the free throw line, made 9 of 10 in the final 3:22 to hold on for the win.
Bucknell made went 8-for-14 from the foul line and turned the ball over 21 times, its second-highest total of the season. Thirteen of those turnovers came in the first half.
In addition to Schober, who tied her career high with her nine rebounds, Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) also reached double figures in points with 16 in her first career start. Schober and Brown combined to shoot 14 of 29 (48.3 percent) from the field, while the rest of the team made 9 of 34 (26.5 percent). Overall, the Bison converted 36.5 percent of their field goals. The Seawolves were 21-for-66 (31.8 percent), including 7-for-25 (28.0 percent) in the second half. Bucknell made 45.5 percent after halftime.
Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) entered the game second in the nation in blocked shots and finished with five rejections to boost her season total to 48. However, the sophomore spent much of the second half on the bench in foul trouble. She added eight points and eight rebounds to her five blocks.
Junior guard Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) came off the bench for the second straight game since her return from a knee injury. She did not score, but dished out three assists and grabbed one rebound in 26 minutes of action.
In addition to her game-high 21 points, Ford dished out five assists for the Seawolves. She finished the game one point shy of 1,000 in her career. Dana Ferraro, who was averaging 10.9 rebounds per game, snared 11, including six offensive boards in 29 minutes.
