LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams will face Delaware in their final home meet of the season this Friday, Jan. 27, beginning with the 400 medley relay at 6 p.m. in Kinney Natatorium.
Both Bison squads are coming off setbacks against tough Columbia teams last week, however the Orange and Blue did come away from the meet against the Lions with six team season-best times on the men's side and five team season-bests for the women.
Current Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week sophomore Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) posted two of the season-best times for the men as he won the 50 free in 21.44 and took the runner-up spot in the 100 free with a time of 47.18.
Seniors Mark Kretzer (Northport, N.Y./Harborfields) and Todd Bauer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) posted season-bests against the Lions as well. Kretzer collected three runner-up finishes for the Orange and Blue as he swam the 100 back in 53.00, a team-season best, posted a time of 52.40 in the 100 fly and completed the 200 IM in 2:00.61. Bauer took second in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.17 and swam a team season-best time of 1:44.65 to finish third in the 200 free.
Senior divers Jake Thompson (Freeport, N.Y./Chaminade) and Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) finished second in the three-meter and one-meter dives, respectively, last Saturday. Thompson's score of 269.02 in the three-meter dive was a personal-best and currently ranks sixth on the program's all-time list. Freeman recorded a mark of 281.85 in the one-meter and took third in the three-meter with 262.65 points, helping him to capture Patriot League Male Diver of the Week honors for a second-straight week.
On the women's side, Sophomore Brittany Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y.) broke into the Bucknell record books with her third-place time of 17:32.44 in the 1650 free against Columbia, good for seventh all-time in program history, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins), freshman Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), freshman Alexandra Lovallo (Ridgefield, Conn.) and junior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) won the event in 3:35.38, the ninth-best time in Bison history.
Senior Lectie Altman (Syracuse, N.Y./William Nottingham) was Bucknell's lone double-winner last time out as she took first in the 100 back with a time of 58.76 and in the 200 back with a time of 2:03.90. With six individual wins, Altman is currently undefeated in the 200 back this season and has four wins and two-runner up finishes in the 100 back.
Senior Mary Krakowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell), junior Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) and Scheffter were all individual winners against Columbia as well. Krakowski took first in the 100 fly with a team season-best time of 58.39 and finished third in the 50 free in 24.81. Goeller took first in the 500 free with a time of 5:10.61, while Scheffter captured the top spot in the 100 free with a time of 52.80, Bucknell's best time in the event so far this season, and was the runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 24.75.
The Bucknell women have faced Delaware 13 times since the series began in the 1986-87 season and have a 6-7-0 record against the Blue Hens. Delaware won the last meeting in 1998-99 by a 124-119 margin, while the last win for the Bison came by the score of 142-83 during the 1997-98 season.
The Bison men are 19-9 since their series with the Blue Hens began in 1957 and came away with a 131-112 victory in the teams' last meeting (1998-99). Delaware's last victory against Bucknell came one season earlier by a score of 126-113.
