Bucknell Men's Swimming and Diving Drops 168-130 Decision to Columbia

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) set new team season-best times in both the 50 and 100 free, but the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team fell to Columbia by the score of 168-130 in Kinney Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
Steadman won the 50 free with a time of 21.44 and swam the 100 free in 47.18, good for second in the event. Sophomore Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) was Bucknell's only other individual winner on the afternoon as he took first in the 100 breast with a time of 59.16. The Bison also posted a victory in the 200 medley relay as the team of freshman Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area), Bennett, senior Mark Kretzer (Northport, N.Y./Harborfields), and Steadman finished with the top time of 1:34.68.
Kretzer collected three runner-up finishes for the Orange and Blue as he swam the 100 back in 53.00, a team-season best, posted a time of 52.40 in the 100 fly and completed the 200 IM in 2:00.61. Senior Todd Bauer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) took second in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.17 and swam a team season-best time of 1:44.65 to finish third in the 200 free.
Junior Matt Crandell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) came in second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:54.10 and captured third in the 100 fly with a time of 52.81. Sophomore John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), freshman Nicholas Hanes (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and senior William Schilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) were all second-place finishers for the Bison as well, Peterman in the 50 free (21.94), Hanes in the 200 back (1:57.68) and Schilling in the 200 breast (2:08.98).
Senior divers Jake Thompson (Freeport, N.Y./Chaminade) and Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) finished second in the three-meter and one-meter dives, respectively. Thompson's score of 269.02 in the three-meter dive was a personal-best and currently ranks sixth on the program's all-time list. Freeman recorded a mark of 281.85 in the one-meter and took third in the three-meter with 262.65 points.
The Bison will next compete on Friday, Jan. 27, as the team will close out its 2005-06 home schedule with a dual meet against Delaware beginning at 6 p.m. in Kinney Natatorium.
