LEWISBURG, Pa. - Four Bucknell players tallied double figures, led by 15 points from Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican), as the Bison women's basketball team snapped a four-game home losing streak with a 73-58 victory over Colgate Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion.
The win kept Bucknell in a first-place tie in the Patriot League standings with Army, which defeated Navy 83-69 Saturday. The Bison and Black Knights are both 4-1 in league play. Bucknell is 10-7 overall, marking the first time it has been at least three games over .500 since the end of the 2001-02 campaign. Colgate, which lost for the sixth time in seven games, fell to 3-14 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Raiders took their only lead of the game when Melanie Cargle, who scored 16 points, including the first six of the game for Colgate, knocked down a baseline jumper for a 6-5 lead. That was the last basket the Raiders would get for nearly seven minutes as they missed eight consecutive field goal attempts while Bucknell reeled off 12 consecutive points.
Bucknell did allow Colgate to draw to within 20-16, but a 3-pointer by Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) with just less than six minutes to play in the half gave the Bison a seven-point cushion and the Raiders would not come closer than that the rest of the game.
Bucknell ended the first half on a 14-5 run as it took a 34-21 lead into halftime. Schober and Brown each contributed five points to the run.
The Bison sprinted out of the gates in the second half following a 3-pointer from Megan Ballard in the opening seconds that brought the Raiders to within 10. Bucknell proceeded to score 13 of the next 15 points over a three-minute stretch to take a commanding 47-26 lead. The advantage ballooned to as many as 26 points after a 3-pointer from Schober, who was 2-for-3 from behind the arc, made it 64-38.
Colgate chipped away at the lead over the final 10 minutes of play, but could not draw to within the 15-point final margin.
Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar), Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) and Brown joined Schober in double figures for Bucknell. Foster tallied 12 points and five rebounds, while Hollobaugh chipped in 11 points and a team-high seven boards. Brown added 11 points and a team-high five assists. That quartet combined to make 19 of 33 (57.6 percent) shots from the field, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range. As a team, the Bison shot 28 of 57 (49.1 percent) overall and 5 of 10 from behind the arc.
Freshman Gretchen Polinski, who did not score in the first half, led Colgate with 17 points as she and Cargle were the only Raiders in double figures. Cargle led the squad with six rebounds, but was one of two Raiders with six turnovers as they turned it over 19 times as a team. Bucknell committed just 13 miscues. The Bison are averaging nine turnovers the past two games.
Saturday's game was the first of a four-game homestand for Bucknell, the longest of the season. The Bison continue the stretch of home games with a non-league game against Columbia Tuesday night, Jan. 24, at Sojka Pavilion. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m.
