LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Corey Curnutte (Waterford, Mich./Detroit Country Day) scored the first goal of his career on a penalty kick with 5:22 remaining in the first half to help the Bucknell men's soccer team upset No. 19 Binghamton 1-0 Wednesday night at Varsity Soccer Field.
Curnutte was awarded the penalty shot after freshman Daniel Ziznewski (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) was taken down by two Bearcat defenders as he tried to race past them in the box. The referee whistled the foul, and Curnutte easily converted the penalty kick past Binghamton goalkeeper Ryan Bertoni, who had two saves in the contest.
Freshman Jason Soto (Hackettstown, N.J./Morris Catholic) nearly gave the Bison a 2-0 lead as time ran out in the first half, but his goal was waved off. Bucknell (5-2-2) gained possession of the ball with 10 seconds on the clock for a throw-in at midfield. After a long throw, Soto bounced the ball past Bertoni, who came out to challenge as time ticked under five seconds. As Soto went past Bertoni to knock the ball into the goal, the referee called a foul on Soto, negating the goal as time expired.
Binghamton did have a prime chance to even the score early in the second half. With just under 39 minutes left in the second half, Pablo Trillo and Cody Germain fired shots at the goal. Trillo's was deflected by a defender, while Bucknell goalkeeper Adam Edwards (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) made a diving save of Germain's line drive.
Despite Bucknell playing predominantly on the defensive end of the field, the Bison were outshot by Binghamton by just a 12-7 margin, including 8-4 in the second half. The Bearcats also held the lead in corner kicks, 6-4.
Adam Edwards recorded his 24th career shutout during Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Binghamton tying him with Ted Peterson atop the Bison career list with 24. |
The victory over the Bearcats marked the second win over a top-20 team by Bucknell this year. The Bison defeated then-No. 18 James Madison 1-0 in the first game of the season.
Binghamton (7-2-1) suffered just its second loss of the season, however, both have come to Patriot League teams. Earlier this month Lehigh, who Bucknell plays at home on Oct. 22, also downed the Bearcats by a 1-0 score.
The Bison return to Patriot League play eyeing their first 2-0 start in Patriot League play since 2003 on Saturday night when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to face Army. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Clinton Field.
