LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman linebacker Julius Hopson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was named the Patriot League Football Rookie of the Week on Monday after a sterling performance in the Bison's 24-7 loss at Cornell on Saturday.
Hopson finished with seven tackles, including four solo hits, and also had a hand in two turnovers. In the third quarter he picked up a fumble and returned it 40 yards into Cornell territory, setting up a field goal attempt. In the fourth quarter, his big hit on a Big Red ballcarrier just shy of the end zone not only prevented a Cornell touchdown, but it jarred the ball loose and Bucknell recovered at its own 3-yard line.
Most of Hopson's playing time came in the second half, when Bucknell held Cornell scoreless and allowed only 103 total yards. He also broke up a pass in the contest.
Hopson has played in all three games thus far as a reserve outside linebacker and has 12 total tackles.
The Bison are idle this week, then look for their first win of the season on Oct. 1 against Marist on Homecoming at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
