Bucknell Men's Water Polo Drops Final Two Games at Southern California Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. - The Bucknell men's water polo team dropped its final two games at the Southern California Tournament Sunday to finish in 16th place in the competitive field that featured 14 ranked teams. The Bison fell 9-5 to No. 16 UC Santa Barbara in their opener, and dropped an 8-5 decision to California Baptist in their final contest of the weekend-long tournament.
Senior Brad Roslyn led all scorers in the first game of the day against UC Santa Barbara with three goals. However, just sophomores Jason Rechel and Kyle Roslyn were able to help him on the offensive end with one goal apiece. Junior Mark Masterson and senior Aaron Platshon tallied one assist each.
Senior Trevor Mullins, who made a season-high 10 saves later in the day against California Baptist, stopped seven shots.
Bucknell trailed by just a 3-2 margin to the 16th-ranked Gauchos at halftime, but UC Santa Barbara exploded for six second half goals as three players finished with two goals apiece in the game.
The Bison faced California Baptist in the second game with the winner earning 15th place in the tournament. Bucknell faced the Lancers on Friday afternoon and lost 9-8. Sunday California Baptist was victorious, 8-5.
The two teams played to a 2-2 tie until late in the third quarter, but the Lancers reeled off three straight goals to take a 5-2 lead.
No Bucknell player scored more than one goal, but Masterson, freshman Gabriel Heiber, Rechel, senior Nick Ferring and Kyle Roslyn each scored one goal.
With the 0-5 weekend in California, the Bison fell to 4-10 on the year. Seven of those losses have come to ranked opponents.
Bucknell will play in the ECAC Championship next weekend, Sept. 24-25. The Bison will open against Harvard at 10:30 Saturday morning in Princeton, N.J.
