LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday afternoon at Varsity Soccer Field as St. Peter's built a two-goal lead in the first half and hung on for a 2-1 victory over the Bison.
Bucknell (3-2-1) goalkeeper Adam Edwards, who had two saves, entered the game with a 297:50 scoreless streak intact, but only lasted 2:15 without allowing a goal against the Peacocks. Carlos Villacrea scored his first goal of the year on a free kick from just outside the box that sailed over Edwards' outstretched arm to end Edwards' scoreless streak at 300:05 and give the Peacocks a 1-0 advantage.
The Bison nearly tied it up about 10 minutes into the first half when off a corner kick, Andrew Loia headed the ball toward the goal, but it sailed wide of the post.
St. Peter's (2-4-0) extended its lead to 2-0 when Murphy Wiredu tallied his second goal of the season. Damion Gaynor was credited with the assist.
Like St. Peter's in the first half, Bucknell scored early in the second half. Just 1:34 into the half Andy Kummer took a crossing pass from Mark Schmiegel to bring the Bison within one goal. Despite a number of chances over the final 43 minutes of play, Bucknell could not tally the tying score.
The Bison had their best chance to even the game with just under 20 minutes to play when they attempted four shots on goal in a 90-second span. Peacock goalkeeper Pat Nagawiecki, who had seven saves in the contest, turned all four away. The closes Bucknell came to scoring during that stretch was a shot by Corey Curnutte that rolled past Nagawiecki, however, Nagawiecki dove on top of the ball just before it reached the goal line.
Bucknell did outshoot St. Peter's 13-10, including 9-5 in the second half. The physical Bison were whistled for 15 fouls to the Peacocks seven, although St. Peter's was called for offsides six times.
After a brief two-match homestand, Bucknell returns to the road Wednesday, Sept. 21, to play at NJIT at 6:30 p.m.
