Southern California Tournament Schedule and Results
IRVINE, Calif. - The Bucknell men's water polo team face a challenging schedule Saturday during the first day of the Southern California Tournament and came away with a pair of losses to nationally ranked opponents. The Bison lost to No. 1 UCLA, 12-2, to open the day, and then dropped a 14-7 decision to No. 9 Loyola Marymount in the nightcap.
The Bison could not get the offense going as the Bruins jumped out to a 5-1 halftime lead. Bucknell could get no closer as UCLA scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter.
Mark Masterson led the way for Bucknell on the offensive end with both goals. Alex Lampley added the first assist of his career. UCLA senior David Pietsch scored three of his game-high four goals in the first quarter, while Justin Johnson, Logan Powell and Tyler Krikorian added two goals apiece.
Trevor Mullins made five saves in goal for Bucknell.
The Bison then faced Loyola Marymount in their second game. The Lions lost their first game to UC Irvine, 10-6, to drop to the consolation bracket with Bucknell.
The Bison offense was stronger against Loyola Marymount as it tallied seven goals. However, the Lions scored 10 first-half goals and led 10-2 at halftime.
Jason Rechel and Aaron Platshon scored two goals apiece, while Brad Roslyn, Gabriel Heiber and Kyle Roslyn each tallied a single goal.
Mullins made four saves against the Lions.
Bucknell, which finished fourth in Group "A" with an 0-2 record Saturday, will face the fourth-place team from Group "D" Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. Eastern. The loser of the UC Santa Barbara-Navy game that was contested Saturday evening will be the Bison's opponent. UC Santa Barbara is the 16th-ranked team in the nation, while Navy is 11th.
