LEWISBURG, Pa. - When Bucknell's Lectie Altman blazed through the Kinney Natatorium pool in a record time of 2:00.60 in the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries at the Patriot League Championships in February, she not only set the stage for a convincing league title in that event, but the time qualified her for next week's ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif.
Altman's qualifying time set school, league and championship records in addition to meeting the NCAA "B" Cut standard. On Thursday, she will swim the 200-meter backstroke at the prestigious national championship meet at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center. Preliminary heats begin at 9 a.m. (Pacific), followed by finals at 6 p.m. (Pacific).
Results will be posted online at www.usaswimming.org.
An All-Patriot League performer, Altman is also the conference champion and school/league record-holder in the 100-yard backstroke (56.29), and she will swim a time trial in the 100-meter backstroke in Irvine on Saturday, Aug. 6.
Altman, who will be a senior in 2005-06 and is also a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, has helped lead the Bison to three straight conference women's swimming and diving titles. In addition to her records in the two backstroke events, she has also competed on 200 and 400 medley relay units that also won Patriot League gold medals and smashed school and league records in 2005.
