LEWISBURG, Pa. - Jennifer Medina, a 2001 graduate of California who both played and coached at her alma mater, will join the Bucknell women's soccer program as the top assistant coach this fall, first-year head coach Ben Landis announced.
A veteran of the Northern California soccer landscape, Medina was a member of the Golden Bears' women's soccer team from 1997-2000. She played in 11 games and drew three starts as a freshman, but suffered an injury and saw action in just 14 matches her final three years.
"I am very pleased to welcome Jennifer to our women's soccer staff," said Landis, who also has second-year graduate assistant Amy Forbes as part of his coaching staff. "Jen is a terrific person who will bring to our program a great attitude, an in-depth playing and coaching experience, and an overall tremendous knowledge for the game. I'm very excited to work with her and believe she'll be an exceptional addition to our staff through her on-field coaching, recruiting, and ability to teach the game as demonstrated by her deep and varied coaching background at the college level, with competitive youth teams, and camps."
Prior to arriving at Cal, Medina was the most valuable player on her club team that won the 1994 national youth championship. She was also a member of the U16 and U17 United States National Teams. Following her college career, Medina played indoor soccer with the United States Futsal Federation (USFF) from 2000-04. She captained her squad to back-to-back national titles in 2002 and 2003. A three-year USFF player representative, she was also a two-time most valuable player and had the opportunity to play international matches against Canada and Australia.
Medina broke into the coaching ranks in 2001 when she served her first of two stints as an assistant coach at Cal. She returned to the Golden Bears' sideline in 2004 and helped guide them to an 11-6-3 record and an NCAA Tournament berth.
In between her two forays on the Cal sideline, Medina served as both an assistant and head coach for a host of soccer teams. She was the full-time head coach for the Juventus U15G team in Redwood City, Calif., along with both the ACC Mavericks U10G and U16G squads in Berkeley, Calif. Medina was honored with the Coaches Award in 2003-04 for her work with the U16G team, a group she has coached since 2000. For the last two falls Medina also was an assistant coach for the Piedmont High School varsity men's soccer team.
Since 1997 Medina has been heavily involved in First Touch Soccer Camps, which she founded, and now serves as director. The organization runs soccer camps throughout the year around the San Francisco Bay Area. Along with instructing, Medina manages a team of coaches and edits the organization's website.
Medina, who already owns her State Futsal Coaching and USSF "C" licenses, recently earned her NSCAA National and Advanced National Diplomas.
Bucknell, which posted a 7-8-1 overall record (2-4-1 Patriot League), will be aiming for its first Patriot League Tournament berth since 2001 this fall.
Bucknell sponsors 27 intercollegiate sports, including 14 for women, at the Division I level (I-AA football). It is a charter member of the Patriot League and has won the league's all-sports championship in 11 of the 15 years it has been contested. Bucknell led the nation with a 100 percent graduation rate in the 2003 survey and ranks third in Division I in producing Academic All-Americans.
