LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sally Anderson, a 2005 Penn State graduate and a three-time NCAA qualifier with the Nittany Lions, will join the Bucknell swimming and diving program as an assistant coach in 2005-06, head coach Jerry Foley announced. A distance specialist as a collegiate swimmer, Anderson's work will be focused on that group with the Bison men's and women's teams.
Raised in a family of swimmers and coaches, Anderson brings 17 years of her own competitive swimming experience to Bucknell, the last four for a Penn State team that ranked among the nation's elite.
"I feel Sally will be an excellent fit for Bucknell Swimming and Diving," said Foley. "She has a tremendous enthusiasm for the sport of swimming, and even at a young age has significantly experienced the sport at its highest levels. Sally understands what it takes to become an All-American, and as an excellent communicator I am confident she will work very well with our student-athletes, alumni and recruits."
A native of Somerset, N.J., Anderson graduated from Penn State this past May with a degree in journalism, with a focus on sports writing. A Dean's List student, she broke school records in the 500-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay. Anderson made three trips to the NCAA Championships and earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 800 free relay in 2004 while helping the Lions to a 15th-place national finish.
For the past year Anderson has honed her coaching skills as an assistant with Big Cat Aquatics in State College. There she trained swimmers from the Junior Olympic level to Olympic Trials qualifiers. She designed and conducted the club's dryland training program and daily workouts and gained valuable deck experience during meets. Anderson also has plenty of camp experience, having worked as a counselor with the Penn State Swim Camp for three years.
In the fall of 2004 Anderson served as a media intern with USA Swimming in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she wrote press releases, coordinated a media function and wrote and edited copy for Splash magazine.
Her mother, Sue Anderson, was a U.S. Olympic Swimmer and world record holder who went on to a very successful career in coaching and is currently an administrator with USA Swimming in Colorado Springs. Sally's father has been a high school teacher and swimming coach in New Jersey for 25 years, and her sister, Katie, was an NCAA All-American and Olympic Trials qualifier at Penn State.
Anderson joins a Bucknell program that has risen to the elite ranks in the Patriot League. The Bison women have captured each of the last three Patriot League titles, while the men finished first in 2003, second in 2004 and fourth in 2005.
Bucknell sponsors 27 intercollegiate sports, including 14 for women, at the Division I level (I-AA football). It is a charter member of the Patriot League and has won the league's all-sports championship in 11 of the 15 years it has been contested. Bucknell led the nation with a 100 percent graduation rate in the 2003 survey and ranks third in Division I in producing Academic All-Americans.
