LEWISBURG, Pa. - Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) has been named the Patriot League Female Field Athlete of the Week for her event winning performance at last Saturday's Jim Thorpe Invitational in State College, Pa. Buczko leaped above the rest of the pole vault field, clearing an ECAC qualifying height of 12-11.5, nearly a foot higher than the second place competitor. She was the only Bison to win an event at the competition.
Buczko is coming off a stellar indoor season in which she became only the second woman in program history to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She finished in a tie for 14th place, with a leap of 13-1.5. Also during the winter campaign, Buczko was crowned the ECAC champion in the event and set the Bucknell school record height at 13-5.5.
Last outdoor season, Buczko finished 11th in the vault at NCAA Outdoor Nationals after placing fourth at the NCAA East Regional event. She is also the outdoor school record holder with a mark of 13-3.5.
Buczko and the Bison will be on the road this weekend with the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. The two-day competition will begin on Friday, April 8. The women's pole vault is set for Saturday, April 9, at 9:30 a.m.
