Bison Track and Field Competes Through Rainy Conditions at Jim Thorpe Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Bison track and field squads competed through the rain at the Jim Thorpe Invitational, Saturday in State College, Pa. Unfortunately, the inclement weather forced all jumping events to be competed indoors, thus none of Saturday's marks are eligible to count towards NCAA Regional standards.
Outside on the track, Christa Sawko finished second in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:37.77, the third-best mark in the Bison record books. Jen Marsh also earned runner-up honors in the distances, clocking a time of 10:27.65 in the 3,000-meters. Also in the 3,000, Erin Cranmer-Hart (10:29.41), Leanna Nastase (10:34.08), and Jennifer Stevens (10:35.39), followed in third, fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Rebecca Pierotti and Katherine Ballentine provided a one-two finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase running times of 12:26.12 and 12:56.78, respectively.
Melanie Buczko finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.37. Catherine Trentacoste finished fourth in the event (15.54), followed by Nina Reinhardt in fifth (16.20). Trentacoste also finished second in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:05.37. Kat Allen was fifth in the event in 1:06.83.
Indoors, Buczko was the winner in the pole vault competition, clearing a height of 12-11.50. Though the mark bested the regional standard of 12-5.50, it will not serve as a qualifier because it was achieved indoors.
In the throws, Beverly Rogers finished second in the javelin with a toss of 136-03. Amanda Mockbee managed a third place showing in the discus with a heave of 131-06. Angie McFarland also finished third, with a mark of 142-07 in the hammer throw. Gwen Soult followed in the fourth in the event with a toss of 138-07.
In the sprints, Erin Turner-Byfield pulled in a second place finish in the 100-meter dash, clocking 13.39. Sarah VandenBroek (13.51), Cindy Darius (13.62) and Lesley Emons (13.67) finished in third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively. Rehana Lanewala notched a fourth place performance in the 200-meters, finishing in 26.20.
In the men's competition, Matt Johnson was the highest finisher for the Bison, notching a second place showing in the 100, clocking 11.87. Matt Corbetta also had a good showing in the sprints, placing third in the 200 in 22.74.
Kevin Brown had the best showing in the distances, finishing fifth in the 1,500 in 4:02.36. The team of Corbetta, Matt Bonelli, Eric Guja and Robert Haferd finished third in the 4x400-meter relay, crossing the finish line in 3:30.01.
In the jumps, Dan Catalano place third in the high jump with a leap of 5-10.75. Mike Contino and Thomas Bennett finished four-five in the long jump with marks of 20-07.00 and 20-04.50, respectively. Bennett took fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 42-11.00.
In the throws, Dan Frake finished third in the hammer with a heave of 153.10. James Meyer followed in fifth with a toss of 133-04. Josh Kaehler placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 167.08.
The Bison will be on the road next weekend with the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. The event will begin on Friday, April 8 and run through Saturday, April 9.
