Bucknell Swimming and Diving Hands Out Awards at Postseason Banquets

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell swimming and diving team recognized several student-athletes for their achievements during the 2004-05 season, last weekend at the team's annual awards banquet. Bison Erika Mannix, Adam Freeman, Ian Rawhauser, Rebecca Scheffter, John Hoffman and Trish Rado were all award recipients at the event.
Mannix (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro) was named the recipient of the "Carol Karpuk Award," given to the most outstanding female diver. The freshman had an exceptional rookie season for the Bison, setting new school records in the three-meter dive (11 dive) and the one-meter dive (six optionals). She tallied an impressive five first place finishes over the season and was named the Patriot League Female Diver of the Week an remarkable four times while receiving ECAC Diver of the Week honors on one occasion.
Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) was the winner of the "Bob Richards Award," presented to the most outstanding male diver. A senior academically, Freeman will still compete next season due to an injury during his junior year. This season, he set new school records in the one-meter dive (six optionals) and the three-meter dive (11 dives). He was recently named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's swimming and diving for the second time in his career. Throughout the year, Freeman was named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week, the Patriot League Male Diver of the Week and the ECAC Male Diver of the Week.
The "Peter O'Keeffe-Jim Harvey Award," given to the athlete who scores the most team points on the men's side, went to Rawhauser (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield). The sophomore was named to the All-Patriot League first team following his 44-point performance at this season's PL Championships. At the championships, Rawhauser earned a bronze medal in the 100-yard freestyle, notched a fourth place finish in the 200 free and placed sixth in the 50 free.
The "Kathy Frazier-Margaret Grunow Award" went to Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore), who tallied the most women's team points for the Bison throughout the season. Scheffter, who was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's swimming and diving, earned a pair of gold medals at the PL Championships, winning both the 50 and 100 freestyles. The sophomore was also a member of three gold-medal winning relay teams, including the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 200 free relay.
The "Dearstyne-Dorr Award" was presented to senior co-captain Hoffman (Island Heights, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) for his contributions to the team in both performance and leadership. The senior set the school record in the 400 individual medley at the PL Championships, good for a bronze medal in the event. Hoffman was an All-PL second team selection after scoring a total of 28 points at the PL meet. He holds the sixth-best time in the 200 IM in the Bison record books and finished seventh in the event at the PL Championships.
Rado (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), a senior tri-captian, was selected as the winner of the "Robert A. Latour Award," given to the athlete who displays exceptional leadership, achievement, sportsmanship and dedication. Rado recorded three scoring performances at the PL Championships, finishing sixth in the 100 backstroke, ninth in the 200 back and 15th in the 100 butterfly.
The Bison women finished first in the PL for the third-consecutive year. Bison head coach Jerry Foley was named the PL Coach of the Year on the women's side. The Bucknell men managed a fourth place finish at the championships.
