LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team hosted Towson in its final non-league game of the season and fell to the Tigers 10-3 at Depew Field Tuesday afternoon. Ryan Schreiter led the way for Towson with five runs batted in, including a three-run home run in the third inning.
Bucknell (14-23) starter Jacob Moss (0-3) picked up the loss as he allowed three runs in the first inning. Three of the first four hitters reached base off Moss to load the bases for Jason Maxey, the nation's leading home run hitter with 17 this season. Moss induced an RBI-ground out off the bat of Maxey, but Schreiter hit a two-run double to left-center to clear the bases. Moss then retired Pat Fields to end the inning, and got Towson (21-18) to go down in order in the second before being removed before the start of the third inning.
Matthew Wilson took over in the third, and after walking Adam Heffron with one out, gave up back-to-back singles to Casper Wells and Maxey. Luckily, Heffron had been thrown out trying to steal second base. However, Schreiter hit his fifth home run of the season to left field to stake the Tigers to an early 6-0 lead.
After being held without a baserunner in the first two innings by Towson starter Matt Holley (3-0), Bucknell threatened in the third when Ryan Gryskevicz walked and Matt Belmont singled to put two runners on first and third with no outs. Holley proceeded to get the next two batters, Brad Duvall and Evan Weiss, to pop out to the infield. He then induced a ground ball off the bat of Matt Capece for the third out.
Bucknell did touch Holley for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the score to 6-2. Chris Brannan drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly to left that scored Kyle Walter, who had reached on an error by the third baseman, Hans Falkenhan. Belmont scored the next inning when he singled to lead off the frame and moved around the bases on a hit by pitch and two ground outs. Capece was credited with the RBI when he grounded out to short.
The final run of the game for the Bison came in the bottom of the sixth off Towson reliever Tyler Travis, who allowed three hits and one run in 3.0 innings. He walked one and struck out three. Brian Day, Brannan and Jason Buursma loaded the bases with none out with a pair of singles and a walk. However, the only run came on a fielder's choice from Gryskevicz. Day scored as the defense gunned down Buursma at second. Travis retired two of the next three hitters to get out of the jam with only one run scored against him.
After Moss' two innings, Bucknell changed pitchers each inning and did not allow another pitcher to go more than one inning. The Bison used eight hurlers in the game. After scoring once in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch by Phil Futrick, Towson added two in the seventh off Max Goldstein and one in the eighth off Buursma.
Goldstein gave up a two-run home run to Fields, while Buursma gave up an unearned run on a single to center by Adam Heffron that scored Justis, who had reached on an error by Ed Rubbo, from second base.
Luke Mara pitched the ninth inning and allowed two baserunners, but neither advanced past second, as he held the Tigers without a run for the first time since the fifth inning.
Bucknell was able to pound out seven hits to score its three runs, with Belmont's 2-for-3 showing at the plate topping the squad.
Towson scored its 10 runs on 12 hits, but did commit two errors. Justis, Wells, Schreiter and Greg Furmanek each registered two hits.
Bucknell wraps up regular season and Patriot League play this weekend with a trip to Worcester, Mass., to take on Holy Cross. The Bison and Crusaders will play doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday. If Bucknell takes three out of the four games they will clinch a position in the Patriot League Tournament. The top three teams in the league qualify for the event, which will be held at the home field of the highest seed May 14-15. Either Army or Lehigh will be the host team.
