LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior attack Chris Cara (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), the all-time leading scorer in Bucknell and Patriot League lacrosse history, has been selected as one of 16 nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is given each year to the most outstanding college lacrosse player.
Cara was also selected as the Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday after totaling 11 points on five goals and six assists in games against Penn State and Colgate.
Cara, who led the nation in scoring in 2004 and is leading again this season, is Bucknell's first Tewaaraton Trophy nominee. The list of 16 will next be narrowed to five finalists, with the winner announced on June 2 in Washington, D.C.
Cara, the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, is one of three Patriot League players to make the final 16. Navy's Mitch Hendler and Army's John Walker are on the list of nominees, which also includes stars from other national powers such as top-ranked Johns Hopkins, Duke, Virginia, Georgetown and Syracuse. Four-time All-American Michael Powell of Syracuse won the Tewaaraton Trophy in 2004.
For the second straight season Cara has topped the 60-point plateau. His two-goal, three-assist performance in Saturday's Patriot League win over Colgate gives him 62 points on 28 goals and 34 assists in 2005. Cara and Bucknell Hall of Famer Pete von Hoffmann are the only players in school history to produce four 30-assist seasons.
Against Penn State last Tuesday Cara broke the Patriot League career scoring record of 238 points by Army's Tim Pearson from 1999-2002. Cara, who now has 245 career points, broke von Hoffmann's Bucknell record of 220 points earlier in the year.
Next up on the record watch list is the school and league assist records. Cara has 135 career helpers, which is three shy of von Hoffmann's Bison record and seven away from Pearson's Patriot League mark. Cara also has moved up to 17th and 22nd on the NCAA career charts for assists and total points, respectively.
Bucknell, ranked No. 13 in this week's Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, takes on No. 10 Army in a Patriot League Tournament semifinal game this Friday at approximately 4:30 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
Earlier this month it was announced that retiring Bucknell head coach Sid Jamieson will be receiving the Spirit of Tewaaraton Award at the June 2 ceremony, in recognition of his four decades of contributions to the sport.
