Jason Buursma and Matt Capece Garner Weekly Patriot League Awards

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Matt Capece (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) was named the Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week while freshman Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) garnered PL Rookie of the Week honors, announced by the league offices on Monday. The Bison duo both posted outstanding numbers during Bucknell's six wins last week, including a four-game sweep of Patriot League foe Lafayette.
The award is the second of the season for Buursma, who leads the team in hitting at .395. His average is also the fourth-best in the Patriot League. Buursma leads the Bison in hitting against Patriot League opponents, posting an average of .413. The freshman batted .500 in 18 at bats this week, playing in five of Bucknell six games. He belted nine base hits on the week, including a double, two triples, nine RBIs and a perfect 3-for-3 performance in Bucknell's first of four wins over Lafayette.
The rookie also helped the Bison on the mound, pitching three innings in relief against Lafayette. He earned his first win on the mound, holding the Leopards hitless to move to 1-2 on the season.

Capece led the Bison in hitting on the week with an impressive .522 average in 23 at bats. The junior smacked 12 hits in six games, including three doubles and one triple. At the conclusion of the week, Capece had hit safely in 11-straight games. He holds the fourth-best season average on the team at .350, and the second-highest average against Patriot League opponents, batting .381.
The shortstop leads the team in several offensive categories, including hits (49), triples (4), and stolen bases (10). He leads the Patriot League in triples and is currently ranked fourth in hits.
The Bison are currently ranked third in the PL with an 8-8 record. Bucknell, 14-22 overall, will take on Towson in a single game tomorrow afternoon at Depew Field, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Bison will then head back into Patriot League play this weekend as they take on Holy Cross on Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1, in Worcester, Mass., in their final PL series of the season.
