LEWISBURG, Pa. - Rebecca Scheffter (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) has been named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's swimming and diving, announced by the league offices on Thursday. Scheffter played in big role in this season's Patriot League Championships, helping her team to their third-consecutive league crown.
She earned a pair of individual gold medals at the championships, winning the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races. Her personal-best times of 23.77 in the 50 free and 51.58 in the 100 free are both the third best times in the Bison record books and were the best by a Bison this season. She also finished sixth in the 200 free in a time of 1:54.25, the fifth-best mark in Bucknell history. She was a first team All-Patriot League selection for her gold medal performances.
Scheffter also helped the Bison to several relay golds as Bucknell won PL titles in the 200 and 400 medley relays and 200 free relay. The Bison also earned a silver medal in the 400 free relay. Scheffter and teammates Lectie Altman, Jamie Flick, and Mary Krakowski blazed to the win the in 200 medley relay, setting new school, meet, league, and pool records in the event. The team earned similar results in the 400 medley, swimming a time of 3:47.48, also shattering all four records. Scheffter combined with Alison Faux, Krakowski and Lauren Reed for another record breaking showing in the 200 free relay, recording a time of 1:34.88.
Prior to the PL meet, Scheffter won a total of nine individual races during the season. She was selected the K.I.C.K.S. Athlete of the Month for Swimming and Diving for the month of December. She was also chosen as one of the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athletes of the Week on Nov. 21, as she was a member of the relay team that clinched a huge come-from-behind win over Army.
Scheffter completes the Bucknell sweep of the PL swimming and diving awards as Bison Adam Freeman claimed the award on the men's side. Scheffter becomes the fourth Bison women to win the award, and the first since Abby Weaver took the honor for the 2000-01 season.
Scheffter carries a 3.8 cumulative GPA in the classroom as a English major with a Linguistics minor.
