LEWISBURG, Pa. - Courtney Gibbons scored six goals to lead St. Bonaventure past Bucknell 14-9 in a non-league women's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at Graham Field. The Bonnies parlayed a 10-0 run into a nine-goal second-half lead, then held off a valiant comeback attempt by the Bison.
In its 2005 home finale, Bucknell (4-11) received eight of its nine goals from freshmen and sophomores, including a career-high three tallies from rookie Elizabeth Whipple. Sophomores Katie Edge and Lauren Kremer scored twice each, while freshman Mackenzie Duane collected her first collegiate goal.
Bucknell took a 3-2 lead after a frenetic opening 10 minutes of play. The teams alternated those first five goals, which all came in a span of just 3:57. Edge scored twice and Tory Field once in the early going, but St. Bonaventure took over the game in the final 18 minutes of the first half, outscoring the Bison 9-0 to take an 11-3 halftime lead.
Gibbons was Bucknell's primary nemesis, as she scored five of the last six goals of the half, including three straight in one 52-second burst. Kelly Chevez, who finished with two goals and three assists, opened the second-half scoring just 1:07 in, but the Bison settled down and outplayed St. Bonaventure (9-4) the rest of the way.
Goalie Lizzy McDaniel was hot early in the half, when she made six of her nine saves on the day. Whipple scored in transition to end Bucknell's 25-minute scoring drought, then she tallied again on a free-position shot for her first career multi-goal performance.
Kremer finished an Andrea Paraud feed for Bucknell's third goal in a row, making it a 12-6 contest with 17:49 to play.
Gibbons and Katie Hurley (three goals) scored back-to-back to stem Bucknell's momentum, but Kremer, Whipple and Duane netted the final three goals of the contest. A resurgent defense, led by five combined takeaways from Lauren Deitrich and Rachel Prowler, helped Bucknell outscore St. Bonaventure 6-3 in the second half.
Whipple also had a game-high five draw controls for the Bison, who now close the regular season with a critical Patriot League contest at American on Saturday. A victory puts Bucknell in the four-team Patriot League Tournament, while a loss eliminates the Orange and Blue from the postseason picture. Game time is 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
