LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior first baseman Lauren Wible, a member of the softball team, earned a pair of awards Monday for her performance last week. She copped both Patriot League Player of the Week and Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week honors after leading the Bison to a 7-1 week during which she hit .476 with four home runs and 11 runs batted in.
The Dover, Pa., native, who leads the nation in hitting with a .525 batting average this season, had her 11-game hitting streak snapped in the first game of the week, a 4-0 loss to Colgate. However, Wible registered at least one hit in each of the next seven games. Since going hitless in the first two games this season she has recorded a hit in 25 of the last 27 for the Bison, who are 12-17 this year. Wible, who has 42 hits in her last 73 at bats (.575), had a pair of multiple-hit games this week and has 11 this year.
Wible had a remarkable four-game weekend series, all Bucknell wins, at Holy Cross. She was 6-for-10 with four home runs and seven runs batted in. The left-handed hitter also walked six times and scored six runs against the Crusaders. With her quartet of home runs, Wible equaled both the Bucknell single-season home run record (six) and career mark (12).
Wible smashed just two doubles this week, both coming in the second game against Saint Francis (Pa.), but that increased her season total to 12. That figure is third on the Bucknell single-season list with eight regular season games to play.
The Patriot League Player of the Week award is the second of the season for Wible. She joins Army's Lisa Huntington as the only two-time winner of the honor this season.
Along with her offensive prowess, Wible has been nearly flawless fielding her first base position. Despite committing an error against Holy Cross to end a stretch of 13 straight contests without a miscue, Wible has a fielding percentage of .989. The error versus the Crusaders was just the third of the season for Wible, who has a .987 career fielding percentage and has made just 12 career miscues.
Bucknell and Wible will be back in action Thursday, April 21, with a doubleheader at Colgate. Originally slated for the weekend of April 2-3, the doubleheader was postponed until this week because of unplayable field conditions. The Bison will be at home this weekend, April 23-24, for a four-game set against Lafayette to round out the Patriot League schedule.
