SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna's Matt Engel belted a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score teammate Chris Mothershed, and down Bucknell, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Bollinger Field, in Selinsgrove, Pa. Kyle Walter launched his fourth homerun in the past seven days, to account for Bucknell's two runs.
The Bison came out swinging with Matt Capece nailing a double to center field in the top of the first inning. Walter would then send a blast over the left field fence to put the Bison out to the early 2-0 lead.
The Crusaders slowly chipped away at the Bucknell lead, while holding the Bison scoreless for the rest of the contest. Susquehanna put its first run on the board in the bottom of the second as John Curry homered to left field. The Crusaders would knot the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Tim Larson scored on a single by Adam Dick.
The Bison seemed to get things going in the top of the eighth as Chris Brannan smacked a two-out single. Controversy erupted as Ryan Gryskevicz appeared to have hit a double to left center scoring the go-ahead run. However, Gryskevicz was called out on an appeal for having missed first base, resulting in the third out of the inning.
Gryskevicz also ended up with the loss on the mound, in 2.2 innings of work. The sophomore gave up only one hit and one run, while striking out four Crusaders. Susquehanna's Ben Shirk got the win, giving up only one hit in six innings on the mound.
The Crusader staff held Bucknell to only five hits on the day. Brannan and Capece led the Bison at the plate, both with 2-for-4 showings.
The Bison, now 7-19, will return home this weekend for a four-game series with Army. First pitch both Saturday and Sunday is slated for 12 p.m.
