NINETY-SIX, S.C. - Freshmen Amy Loughney carded a career-best 76, one of three scores of 81 or better for Bucknell, but the Bison moved down one spot to fifth place after the second of three rounds of the PUPS Big South Championship at The Patriot at Grand Harbor. The Bison shot 325 as a team on Tuesday (639 overall) and trail Birmingham Southern (596), Coastal Carolina (599), High Point (600) and Winthrop (634) in the eight-team field.
Bucknell set a school record with a round of 315 on Monday, and the 639 total is a new 36-hole record. The Bison finished sixth in their first two Big South Championship appearances, but now they have a 19-shot lead over sixth-place Charleston Southern with 18 holes to play. Radford (663) and Holy Cross (750) round out the field.
Loughney moved into a tie for 10th place individually after her second straight career-best round. Her four-over-par 76 was also the low round of the year for any Bucknell player and the eighth-best score of the day in the 39-player field. The best Big South finish by a Bison player is a tie for 11th by Celine Herbin in 2004.
Kristen Phalen fired her second straight round of 77 and currently sits in 12th place. Teri Shlang also matched her first-round total of 81 and is tied for 22nd. While Schlang's 81 was Bucknell's No. 4 score in the first round, the Bison had to count a 90 in round two as Jaime Hays slipped from 82 to 90 and Kathryn Batchelor from 80 to 91.
High Point's 299 was the low team score of the day and moved it into contention just four shots off the lead. The low individual round of the day also came from High Point, as Kate O'Sullivan shot a 1-under 71 to pull within one shot of leader Line Cordes of Coastal Carolina. First-round leader Shelley McGraw of Birmingham Southern slipped from 70 to 80 and is now tied for fifth.
Bucknell will be paired with Winthrop and Charleston Southern in Wednesday's final round, with the first threesome teeing off at 7:30 a.m.
