LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell football team is still five months away from its 2005 season opener against Georgetown, but a crucial development period begins Saturday morning with the start of spring practice. The opening session begins with an 8:15 a.m. meeting at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, with practice to follow at approximately 9 a.m.
Saturday's workout will be the first of 15 spring sessions, with the last being the annual Orange vs. Blue Game, which is slated for Saturday, Apr. 30 at 3 p.m.
Coach Tim Landis' Bison squad is coming off a successful 7-4 season that wrapped up with a four-game winning streak. Bucknell went 4-2 in Patriot League play and finished in third place. The Bison graduate 12 starters from that team, however, six on each side of the ball.
Among the key players back in 2005 are defensive end Sean Conover, the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, and cornerback/return specialist Dante Ross, last year's Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Year. The Bison also return three starters on the offensive line and fullback Blamah Sarnor, who missed the last eight games of the 2004 season with a broken kneecap.
This will be an important spring camp for quarterbacks Ryan Ahern and Terrance Wilson, two rising sophomores who will be competing for the starting QB job vacated by electrifying senior Daris Wilson, the 2004 First-Team All-Patriot League signal caller.
In addition to the spring game, another key date this month is the annual Bucknell Football Family Funfest, which will be Apr. 24 at 2 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
