SALEM, W. Va. - For the second consecutive weekend the Bucknell women's water polo team played Salem International and for the second consecutive weekend the Bison defeated the Tigers. The 20th-ranked Bucknell squad defeated Salem 15-2 in the first of its two games Saturday. In the nightcap, the Bison fell to No. 16 Princeton 8-4.
The afternoon win over Salem was the ninth straight win for Bucknell (11-2, 3-1 CWPA) which equaled a program record set in 2000.
As they have become accustomed to doing, the Bison jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Salem 4-0 in the first quarter. Bucknell, which defeated Salem 14-5 last weekend, holds a 40-11 advantage over its opponents in the first quarter of games this season. The Bison continued to tack goals on as they tallied five goals in both the second and third quarters before playing Salem to a 1-1 deadlock in the final quarter.
Kat Eckert and Mallory Sullivan, who netted three goals apiece, led Bucknell on the offensive end. Meagan Gins and Adrienne Fischer each tallied two goals, while Cody Keffer, Susan Kingerski, Jessica Trimis, Elizabeth Jensen and Jennifer Swoyer each scored once.
The Bison were very efficient on offense as they scored their 15 goals on just 21 shots. They also had assists on all but one goal with 11 different players picking up assists.
Katie Colgan earned the start in goal, but split time with Mandy Bynum. Colgan registered eight saves to go along with one steal and an assist. Bynum stopped six shots and picked up one steal. Each goalie allowed one goal as Bucknell improved to 8-6 all-time versus Salem.
Bucknell's winning streak ended against Princeton, the 16th-ranked team in the nation. The Bison fell behind early, trailing 2-0 after the first quarter, and 4-1 at halftime. Bucknell scored three goals in the third, but gave up three to the Tigers as they could not close the gap. Princeton added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 8-4.
Blitzer and Gins, who are first and second on the team in goals and points, tallied three of Bucknell's four goals. Gins upped her season total to 23 scores with a pair of goals, while Blitzer found the back of the net once to give her 25 goals. She now has 157 career goals, four shy of equaling Brooke Rea's school record of 161.
Blitzer also assisted on one goal. Katie Hartigan led the team with two assists, while Elizabeth Jensen added her eighth of the season.
In goal, Mandy Bynum equaled her season high for saves with 12. She also made a dozen saves during a 6-5 victory over Brown Feb. 12.
Bucknell will be in action next weekend when it travels to San Diego, Calif. The Bison will battle UC-San Diego and San Diego State Saturday, March 12. The next day they will take on Cal State Northridge and the same Princeton team they faced Saturday.
