COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Meg Blitzer scored eight points in two games, including five goals and one assist in the nightcap against the host team, as the Bucknell women's water polo team defeated Salem International 11-1 and Maryland 16-3 in College Park, Md., Saturday. The eight points vaulted Blitzer's career total to 260 to set a new Bison career mark.
Blitzer scored two goals in the opener against the Tigers to draw within three points of Adrienne Schober's Bucknell career standard of 257 points. She then netted five goals and assisted on another to equal her season high for points (six) as the Bison trounced the Terrapins.
With the two victories Saturday, Bucknell (19-8, 5-2) clinched either a second or third seed in the Southern Division Championships, held at Kinney Natatorium April 23-24. The Bison also broke the school record for most wins in a season by notching their 19th against the Terps.
Bucknell dominated both games early. The Bison jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead against Salem and never looked back as their defense allowed just one goal to equal a program record that had occurred only four other times. Blitzer and Jennifer Swoyer each had two goals, while Jessica Trimis led the way with three. Cody Keffer, Katie Hartigan, Kat Eckert and Laura Stalker each added one. Bucknell was successful on 11 of its 14 shot attempts in the game.
Katie Colgan saw action in goal for the first time this month and made four saves while allowing just the one goal, which came in the third quarter.
The second game was more of the same for the Bison who streaked out to a 9-1 halftime advantage before outscoring Maryland 7-2 in the second half. The 16 goals were a season-high total for the Bison. Blitzer led four Bucknell players who tallied at least two goals with her five-goal one-assist performance. Meagan Gins (3), Stalker (2) and Trimis (2) also scored more than once as the Bison converted 16 of 22 shots in the game.
Bucknell's suffocating defense, which tallied a season-high 18 steals, was led by goalie Mandy Bynum's nine saves. Blitzer, who had four steals, and Eckert, who registered three, also helped hold Maryland to just three goals.
With the victories Saturday, Bucknell improved to 3-0 this season against both Salem International and Maryland.
The Bison will wrap up their regular season Sunday, April 10, at 11 a.m. against George Washington. With a win Bucknell will clinch the second seed in the Southern Division Championships.
