I arrived in Sarasota at 11:30 a.m. My friend Derek, who played at Maryland-Baltimore County, and I were picked up by RJ, our team administrator, at baggage claim and headed to our apartment complex in Bradenton, Fla. We were greeted by our equipment manager Bradan, who gave us our uniforms and equipment we needed for the week. We received a training top, sweat suit, shorts and socks. We also received two polo shirts to wear to dinners and meetings, as well as cleats, running shoes, casual shorts, and a hoodie, all with Real Salt Lake team logos.
Following that, I was assigned my room, where I met my roommates, Matt Behncke and Brian Kamler. Matt is a 24-year-old defender from Princeton who is currently in his third year in the MLS. Brian is a 33-year-old midfielder from Creighton University who is in his 10th year in the league. At 6 p.m. we left for a team dinner where we were greeted by our team owner, Dave Checketts, at a local seafood restaurant. After dinner we went back to our apartment and got to know each other better as we watched television before heading to bed early in anticipation of training the next day.
