LEWISBURG, Pa. - Emily Burman and Andrea Paraud scored four goals apiece to lead Bucknell's women's lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over Harvard on Wednesday night at Graham Field. The Bison (3-7), who are now 3-0 at home this season, had their best offensive output of the season while limiting Harvard to just one goal in the last 24 minutes of the contest.
Burman's fourth and final goal of the night, on a free position shot with 17:49 to play, gave the Bison a 10-7 lead, but things got tense for Bucknell just inside the six-minute mark when goalie Lizzy McDaniel (7 saves) was carded and sent off for tripping a Harvard player behind the cage.
That led to an easy empty-net goal for Harvard's Allie Kaveney with backup goalie Kristin Gaines positioned out of the play on the restart. But Gaines was spectacular in an emergency relief effort, as she stopped four shots in the last four minutes of the contest to preserve the slim lead.
Elizabeth Whipple provided a key insurance goal with 5:01 left when she parlayed a Harvard turnover into an unassisted goal.
Bucknell led 8-5 after a high-scoring first half. The lead was just 4-3 when Paraud, Burman and Abby Brewster scored just 2:54 apart, all on free position shots, to make it 7-3. Natalie Curtis and Liz Gamble tallied for Harvard (2-4) to make it 7-5, but Burman charged the net and scored with just seven seconds left in the half to squelch the Crimson's momentum.
Burman and Paraud also added assists, giving them five-point nights. Whipple also assisted on a first-half goal, making her the only other multi-point producer for the Bison, who avenged an 18-8 loss to the Crimson last season in Cambridge, Mass. Curtis and Keveney scored twice each for Harvard.
Kristin Demorest made eight saves for Harvard, which was outshot by a narrow 26-24 margin.
