EASTON, Pa. - Kirk Klett scored a career-high five goals and Chris Cara became the school's all-time scoring leader as the 17th-ranked Bucknell men's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 in the Patriot League and 5-2 overall with a 14-2 victory at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon. Cara picked up a goal and four assists and Patrick Christensen scored two goals for the Bison, who scored 11 of their 14 goals in the first half. Cara upped his career scoring 223, breaking Pete von Hoffmann's previous record of 220, set from 1976-79.
Every healthy player saw action for Bucknell, which outshot Lafayette 47-19 and had a near-perfect day (19-20) clearing the ball. Matt Baran logged five saves in 35 minutes in goal, and Mark Davis pitched a shutout the rest of the way, making four saves.
Jon Paulson scored both goals - one in the second quarter and one in the third - for the Leopards, who fell to 0-7, 0-3.
Cara opened the scoring with his 18th goal of the year just 2:49 into the game as Bucknell scored on its first four shots and raced to an 11-0 lead. Nick Marks scored a man-up goal to make it 2-0 and two minutes later freshman Rick Carolan scored his first career goal for a 3-0 lead. Brian Gargan and Klett made it 5-0 by the end of the first period.
Christensen and Klett scored twice each in the second quarter, and another freshman, Jon Schneider, posted his first collegiate goal. Paulson's unassisted tally with 49 seconds left in the half broke up the shutout.
Paulson scored again two minutes into the second half, but that would be it for the Leopards, who were kept off the scoreboard for the first 29:11 and the last 28:04 of the game.
Klett scored twice more in the third and Patrick Lenhart tallied in the fourth to close the scoring.
Three Lafayette goalies combined for 14 saves, led by seven from starter Chris Rosa.
Bucknell won 12 of 19 faceoffs, with freshman Austin Sanders taking 6 of 8.
The Bison return home next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Patriot League rival Lehigh. Retiring head coach Sid Jamieson will be honored before that contest.
