LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore center Chris McNaughton (Leutershausen, Germany), who turned many heads over the weekend with his outstanding play in two NCAA Tournament games, has been named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
Going head-to-head with two of the best centers in the country in First-Team All-Big 12 honoree Wayne Simien of Kansas and First-Team All-Big 10 pick Mike Wilkinson of Wisconsin, McNaughton tallied 37 points on 16-for-21 shooting in the two games. Of that total, no two points were bigger than his game-winning hook shot with 10.5 seconds to play in Bucknell's stunning 64-63 upset win over third-seeded Kansas on Friday night. The Bison won its first-ever NCAA Tournament game and also became the first Patriot League team to win in the national tourney.
Despite first-half foul trouble, McNaughton scored 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting against the Jayhawks. Two days later against Wisconsin, he logged a career-high 23 points, making 10 of 14 from the floor, and was named the Chevrolet Player of the Game on the CBS broadcast.
McNaughton finished the season with a 12.6 ppg scoring average, second on the team and just two total points behind leader Kevin Bettencourt. McNaughton shot 59.6 percent from the floor, which is the seventh-best single-season total in school history. His career percentage of .626 ranks second all-time at Bucknell.
Bucknell ended the season on Sunday with a 71-62 loss to sixth-seeded Wisconsin. The Bison finished with a 23-10 record, one shy of the school victory record.
