LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell opened its 2005 home campaign on a high note by defeating Holy Cross 9-7 in women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Graham Field. The win was the first on the field for the Bison, who were awarded a forfeit victory over Lafayette earlier this season.
Bucknell (2-5 overall, 2-0 in the Patriot League) took its first lead of the season other than 1-0 when Elizabeth Whipple scored with 13:13 left in the first half to give the Bison a 3-2 advantage. Holy Cross tied it up 65 seconds later when Trish Sutton tallied the first of her three goals in the game.
Bucknell quickly answered as Katie Edge scored two goals less than a minute apart to give the Bison their first two-goal lead this season at 5-3 with 9:16 to play in the opening half.
Bucknell ended the first half clinging to a 5-4 lead, but opened up a four-goal cushion by scoring three straight in the first 7:16 of the second half as Emily Burman netted a pair of goals and Lauren Kremer added one.
With the 8-4 lead and just over 20 minutes to play Bucknell tried to slow the game down, but the Crusaders chipped away at the lead, narrowing it to 8-7 with 5:40 left after two goals by Sutton 45 seconds apart. The second came on a free position shot.
Edge, who led Bucknell with three goals, sealed the game for the Bison when she netted her final goal with 13 seconds remaining on the clock.
Lizzy McDaniel played the whole game in goal for the Bison and made 12 saves, while Holy Cross' goalie, Megan Orr, stopped eight shots, including six in the second half.
Andrea Paraud led Bucknell in scoring with two goals and a pair of assists. Sutton added one assist to go along with her three goals for the Crusaders, who outshot Bucknell 25-19.
The victory for the Bison improved their Patriot League record to 2-0. It is the first time in the 15 years Bucknell has been a member of the Patriot League it started the campaign with a 2-0 mark.
The Bison will return to the road Wednesday, March 23, when they travel to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers at 5 p.m.
