Bison Baseball Falls to Ohio State 14-3 in Final Spring Break Contest

BRADENTON, Fla. - With the score knotted at 2-2 after three complete innings, Ohio State put seven runs on the board and all but put away the Bison baseball team for the day, Saturday in Bradenton, Fla. The Bison lost by a final score of 14-3, to fall to 1-11 on the year and 1-5 over spring break in Bradenton.
The Buckeyes (6-4) went ahead early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning as Wes Schirtzinger crossed the plate on a Adam Scheider single to center field and Ronnie Bourquin scored on a double down the left field line off the bat of Eric Fryer.
The Bison evened up the score in the bottom of the third with Tim Hansberry reaching base on a walk and Chris Grandizio blasting a double down the left field line. Hansberry would cross the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Matt Capece and Grandizio would come home as Kyle Walter would reach on an error.
Ohio State stormed back in the top of the fourth putting seven runs on the board to make the score 9-2. The Buckeyes pounded Bison reliever Luke Mara smacking six hits, including three doubles and a two-run homerun Jed Stephen. Nathan Mittag took the mound in relief and allowed one more OSU hit but no more runs. Mara received the loss to move to 0-1 on the year.
The Buckeyes brought another two runs around in the top of the eighth making the score to 11-2. Ohio State plated their final three runs of the game in the top of the ninth inning bringing their lead to an 12-run margin.
The Bison made the score 14-3 in the bottom of the ninth as Chris Brannan scored after hitting a lead-off double to right center. Offensively, the Bison recorded seven hits on the day, coming from Grandizio, Evan Weiss, Jason Buursma, Chris Pieper, Brannan, Hansberry and Mike Barrett.
Next up for the Bison are the Nittany Lions of Penn State. The double-header is slated for March 23, starting at 1 p.m.
