KISIMMEE, Fla. - The Bucknell softball team batted around for the first time this season and scored four runs in the third inning to defeat Rider 6-4 Friday evening during the final day of the Rebel Spring Games. The Bison completed the week with a 4-5 record.
After giving up three runs in the top of the third inning, Bucknell posted a four-run bottom half of the inning by sending nine hitters to the plate. Seven consecutive hitters reached base after Michelle Danish led the inning off with a groundout.
Jill Pompeii set the table for the inning with a one-out single to center field. Heather Haskin followed with her third hit of the day after registering two against Wisconsin-Green Bay. Lauren Wible, who leads the team in hitting at .464, reached on a fielder's choice. Then, the first run of the inning scored when Rider's starting pitcher Jessica Holland uncorked a wild pitch. After an Alyssa Schneebaum walk, Kris Devore, who was one of three Bison with two hits in the game, singled to knock Wible in and advance Schneebaum to third. Schneebaum scored the third run of the inning on another wild pitch from Holland. Holland and Maddy Boulden combined to throw four wild pitches.
Devore scored Bucknell's final run of the inning when Ashley Sarnecky reached on an infield single. Monica Grinage, the ninth player to come to the plate, ended the inning with a strikeout.
The Bison added on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Devore led off the fifth inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sarnecky. Megan Good then hit a hard grounder under the outstretched arm of second baseman Ashley Boulden to score Devore, who is second on the team with four runs scored this season.
Schneebaum picked up the RBI on the final run of the game for Bucknell when she laid down a perfect bunt with Pompeii on third base, enabling Pompeii to scamper home.
Julie Williams pitched the complete game for Bucknell to pick up her first win of the season. She scattered 10 hits and walked just two batters, while striking out five.
Seven of Bucknell's nine hitters in the starting lineup had at least one hit. Devore and Pompeii were each 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Good was 2-for-3 with her first RBI this season.
Bucknell returns home next weekend, March 26 and 27. The Bison will host Lehigh in doubleheaders both days as they open Patriot League play.
