BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Bison baseball team came out strong on Monday morning, going ahead of Illinois State 2-0 with two innings completed. However, the Bison, now 0-8, failed to score anymore runs losing the contest 6-2. Freshman Ed Rubbo made the offensive play of the day for the Bison hitting his first homerun in a Bison uniform.
The Bison got out to the early lead in the top of the first when Matt Capece singled up the middle and stole second base. Ryan Gryskevicz plated his teammate with a double over the right fielder's head leaving the score at 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
The Redbirds (6-7) threatened in the bottom of the first with runners on first and second but were quickly retired as Brian Day completed an unassisted double play at first, catching a line drive off the bat of Jay Molina and tagging runner Ryan Anetsberger out at the bag.
Freshman Ed Rubbo made the score 2-0 in the top of the second, smashing a solo home run over the left field wall, for his first round-tripper as a Bison.
The Redbird offense was stagnant for the next three innings behind stellar pitching by starter Tim Peacock and a flawless effort by the Bucknell defensive unit. The Bison would retire Illinois State in order in 2 of 3 innings. A double by Redbird Kris Jenkins was the only ball to find a gap in the Bison outfield.
Illinois State put their first run on the board in the bottom of the fifth with Lee Fischer scoring on a Blake Schoonover single.
The Redbirds made the score 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Fischer slapped a two-run double to right-center plating teammates Jay Molina and Luke Baughman. The Redbirds added two more runs when Fischer crossed the plate on a Blake Schoonover single. Schoonover would score on a single by Chris Frank making the score 5-2 with six completed. ISUs final run was scored in the bottom of the eighth when Redbird Brian Davis scored on a fielders choice.
Next up for the Bison are the Panthers of Northern Iowa. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Academy Park in Bradenton, Fla.
