SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After winning a school record-tying nine games in a row, the Bucknell women's water polo team lost its second and third contests in a row as it dropped a pair of 10-4 decisions to nationally ranked teams Saturday during its first day of competition on its spring break trip to California. The Bison opened the day with a 10-4 loss to No. 18 San Diego, and ended it with a loss to No. 11 San Diego State by the same score.
Highlighting the day was Meg Blitzer's four goals, two in each game. Those scores vaulted her into a tie for first place on Bucknell's career goal-scoring list with Brooke Rea at 161. Blitzer leads the team with 29 goals this season.
Mandy Bynum also had a solid day in goal as she stopped a career high 14 shots, including three penalty shots, in the loss to San Diego State. That figure was just three short of tying Lindsay Chesterfield's Bison single-game record of 17. Bynum made five saves in the opener and has 94 this season.
In addition to Blitzer's strong offensive output, Jessica Trimis had a couple of goals as she netted one in each game. Cody Keffer had one assist in each game, and added a goal in the nightcap. Elizabeth Jensen, who scored one goal in the opener, rounded out the day's scoring for the Bison.
Bucknell wraps up its weekend play in San Diego Sunday, March 13, with battles against Cal-State Northridge and Princeton at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
