Virginia Downs Bucknell 2-0, 13-3 in Saturday's Double Header to Sweep Series

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Bucknell baseball team fell 2-0 and 13-3 in Saturday's double-header versus Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. Virgina (5-2) swept the Bison (0-3) in a three-game series this weekend. Bucknell's Matt Curry (0-1) and Nathan Mittag (0-1) took the losses on the mound. Curry gave up four hits and two runs, struck out two and walked three in five complete innings in game one while Mittag allowed six runs, four earned, struck out two and walked two.
The Cavaliers scored both their runs of the first game in the third inning opening up with back-to-back singles. With Tim Henry and Matt Street on base, Ryan Zimmerman hit a single to left center, scoring Henry and Street. Matt Capece and Kyle Walter both went 2-for-4 for the Bison in the first game.
In the second game, Virginia got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the first. Henry reached base on an error by Mittag and advanced to second on another Mittag error. Zimmerman grounded out to second, advancing Henry to third. Sean Doolittle singled to shortstop plating Henry.
The Cavaliers broke the game open in the bottom of the third scoring four runs on two hits and one Bison error. Zimmerman picked up two RBIs with a double down the left field line. Two more Cavaliers crossed the plate when shortstop Capece made a throwing error.
The Bison got on the board in the fourth inning when Chris Pieper scored off an Evan Weiss single to center. Pieper had reached base with a double down the left field line. Virginia added another run in the fifth and five more in the sixth with four hits and two Bison errors making the score 11-1 with six completed.
In the seventh inning, Mike Barrett was hit by a pitch, Brian Day walked and Ed Rubbo walked, loading the bases for Capece. Capece reached on a fielders choice as Barrett crossed the plate for an RBI. Virgina added one run in the seventh and one run in the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, Chris Grandizio and Sean Hirsch reached base with back-to-back singles. With one out, Matt Belmont singled to center scoring Grandizio to make the score 13-3.
The Bison will be back in Virginia next weekend to take on Liberty of the Big South Conference in another three-game set. A double-header will be played on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 12 p.m., the third game will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Lynchburg, Va.
