STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Bison men's tennis team lost in the 7-0 shut-out to a powerful Penn State team on Wednesday in State College, Pa. Despite failing to earn a win from the No. 61 team in the ITA rankings, the Bison played well in the two and three doubles matches, falling just short of picking up two wins.
Freshman Ira Reibeisen and sophomore Matt Pikus took Penn State's Ryan Berger and Bradley Hunter to the wire in two doubles losing 9-7. Senior Gerald DiChiara and junior Garrett Neff also played a tough match against Chris Sherman and Michael James falling in a slim 8-6 decision.
"We were up a break in each of the two and three doubles matches," said Bucknell assistant coach Stephen Monge. "We had shots to win but a couple of things didn't go our way."
In singles play, Reibeisen, Asher Salam, Nick Denefrio, DiChiara, Pikus and Joe Menezes each played a hard-fought match but came up winless against tough competition.
"We were very competitive and hung with them tough but they were just a couple shots better than us in big situations," said Monge of Bucknell's singles play.
After only a few days off, the Bison will be back on the road this weekend at St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y. Bucknell will take on St. Bonaventure at 9 a.m. and Buffalo at 3 p.m on Saturday, Feb. 19.
