Bison Women's Water Polo Splits Pair of Games at Princeton Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bucknell women's water polo team lost to Harvard 5-2 and defeated Maryland 13-4 during the second, and final, day of the Princeton Invitational Sunday afternoon. After sweeping Marist and Brown on Saturday, the Bison stand at 3-1 after the season's opening weekend.
In the second game against Maryland, Bucknell held just a 5-3 lead at halftime, but scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter to go up 10-3. The Bison tacked on three more scores in the final period, while holding the Terrapins to just one goal en route to its second 13-4 victory of the weekend.
Meg Blitzer scored five goals on five shots in the game after being held scoreless against Harvard in the opener. Five other Bison scored goals, including Meagan Gins, who had three goals, and Jennifer Swoyer, who found the back of the net twice. Adrienne Fischer, Mallory Sullivan and Katie Hartigan each added single goals.
Playing very unselfishly, Bucknell assisted on 12 of its 13 goals. Sullivan, Cody Keffer, Ashley Aiken and Laura Stalker had two assists apiece. Four other Bison had single assists, including Blitzer, who leads the team with 11 points this season.
Katie Colgan earned her second start of the season in goal and stopped five shots. Her 15 saves in two games eclipses her season total of 10 last year.
In the opener against Harvard, a team Bucknell is now 3-4 against all-time, the Crimson held the Bison scoreless in the second half. The two teams went into halftime with Bucknell leading 2-1, but Harvard added one goal in the third quarter, and three more in the fourth for its 5-2 victory.
Sulivan and Gins scored the lone goals for Bucknell, while Hartigan tallied the only assist in the game.
Mandy Bynum started in goal and made 11 saves against Harvard.
Bucknell returns to action next weekend, Feb. 18-20, when it hosts the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison are scheduled to play five games at Kinney Natatorium with the first coming Friday night at 8 p.m. against George Washington.
