COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 20th-ranked Bucknell women's water polo team posted a 14-5 victory over Salem International Saturday afternoon. The win was the eighth in a row for the Bison, who improved to 10-1.
Just six victories shy of equaling its win total from all of last year, Bucknell was led by Laura Stalker's career-high four goals. A quartet of Bison each added two goals, while Kat Eckert and Margot Grant rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Jessica Trimis, Sadie Abuhoff, Adrienne Fischer and Jennifer Swoyer were the four players to find the back of the net twice.
Bucknell, as it has been accustomed to doing this season, jumped out to a 6-1 first-quarter lead. The Bison have outscored the opposition 36-9 in the first seven minutes of play this year. After outscoring the Tigers just 5-4 in the middle two quarters, Bucknell closed the game by holding Salem International without a goal in the final quarter while tacking on three more of its own.
Goalie Katie Colgan made five saves to lead the Bucknell defense. She also added two assists to contribute to the offensive output. Additionally, she tallied one steal. The Bison registered 15 steals as a team with Stalker and Susan Kingerski leading the way with three apiece.
Also on Saturday Bucknell defeated a Navy club team in an exhibition game that does not count in its record, 13-12, on a goal in sudden-victory overtime by Cody Keffer off a pass from Meg Blitzer. The Bison downed a New York Athletic Club squad, 13-6. That contest did not count in their overall record either.
The Bison will be back in action next weekend, Saturday, March 5, when they travel to Salem, W. Va., to take on this same Tigers team. Bucknell will also face nationally ranked Princeton.
