PRINCETON, N.J. - After holding Marist scoreless in the first half of its first game of the 2005 season, the Bucknell women's water polo team did not score a goal in the first half of its second game. Despite that, the Bison won its first two games of the year Saturday at the two-day Princeton Invitational, defeating Marist 13-4 in the opener, and downing Brown 6-5 in the nightcap.
In the season opener against the Red Foxes, Bucknell sprinted to a 9-0 halftime lead before coasting to the 13-4 victory. Ten different Bison scored goals with Cody Keffer, Meg Blitzer and Jessica Trimis each netting two. Nine different players recorded one assist, with Blitzer and Trimis leading the team with three points apiece.
Katie Colgan drew the start in goal in the opener and made 10 saves while allowing just the four goals, three of which came in the fourth quarter. In five games last year as a freshman Colgan made just 10 saves while allowing 14 goals.
Bucknell faced a tougher challenge in the second game of the day against Brown, a team ranked two spots higher than the seventh-ranked Bison in the CWPA Top 10 poll. The Bears, who Bucknell was just 1-3 against all-time entering the game, held the Bison without a goal before halftime. However, Bucknell limited Brown to just one second-quarter goal in the first half.
The second half featured more offense from both squads. After three periods it was even at 2-2. Then, in the fourth quarter, Brown scored the first two goals to take a 4-2 lead. However, the Bison tallied four of the final five goals of the game for their 6-5 victory.
Meagan Gins, who attempted a team-high six shots, was the only Bucknell player to score more than once, tallying two goals. Keffer, Ashley Aiken, Blitzer and Elizabeth Jensen each added one goal. Gins, Aiken and Blitzer, along with Katie Hartigan, were each credited with an assist.
Mandy Bynum, who ranks third on Bucknell's career saves list, recorded 12 saves against Brown.
Bucknell wraps up play at the Princeton Invitational Sunday afternoon. The Bison will battle Harvard at 1:10 p.m., and will take on Maryland at 3:30 p.m.
