LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second year in a row, Bucknell senior Jonathan Hemmert was named the 2004 Patriot League Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete, the league office announced on Thursday.
Hemmert, who became just the second Bison men's soccer player to win the award last year, joins former Bison Greg Beatty as the only men's soccer players in the conference to win the award twice. Beatty was honored in 1993 and 1994.
This season, Hemmert was also named to the 2004 Academic All-America University Division First Team for the second consecutive year. He became the 108th Academic All-American in Bucknell history. He also earned a spot on the NSCAA Scholar All-East Region First Team.
Hemmert had an outstanding final season for the Bison, ranking second on the team in goals (5), assists (5) and points (15). On two separate occasions this past year the midfielder tallied three points in a match. The first time came during a 4-3 loss to La Salle. Hemmert scored one goal and assisted on another against the Explorers. Two games later he assisted on all three goals in a 3-2 victory over NJIT.
The Westerville, Ohio, native started all 17 games he appeared in last season and upped his career assist total to 22, second on Bucknell's all-time list. With 10 career goals to go with his 22 assists, Hemmert finished his career with 42 points.
In the classroom, Hemmert has been equally successful, maintaining a 3.91 cumulative grade point average while majoring in political science and classics. The 17th two-time Scholar-Athlete in Bucknell history, Hemmert is also a Dean's List member. In addition, he is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and spent the spring semester of his junior year studying abroad in Italy.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete citation, a player must be at least a sophomore and a starter or significant reserved on his team, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
Bucknell finished its season 7-9-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the Patriot League. The Bison were the third seed in the Patriot League postseason tournament and lost to second-seeded Lehigh 6-5 in a shootout after the two teams played to a 0-0 tie.
Bucknell has claimed 95 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes, the most among league schools, in the 15-year history of the conference.
