LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey program announced its 2005 award winners on Saturday, Dec. 3, at their annual season-ending banquet. In honor of her first class of four-year players and in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the field hockey program, head coach Heather Lewis established the Class of '96 Awards to be given annually. This year's winners were seniors Katie Watt (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS), Carli Cataldo (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks East), Liz Jordan (Towson, Md./St. Paul's School), Kelly O'Brien (Rye, N.Y./Rye), and sophomore Kelly Hoffman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley).
Watt was honored with the Marja Bakermans Award of Loyalty, which is used to recognize the true spirit of the individual who, in an unselfish manner and positive attitude, sacrifices individual pursuits for the benefit of team accomplishments. Watt, who transferred to Bucknell from Northwestern her junior year, saw action in 16 games this season, including three starts, recording one goal for two points.
Cataldo, a past member of the Patriot Academic Honor Roll and the NFHCA All-Academic Squad, received the Tracy Bass Award for Intensity, given to the athlete to acknowledge the true spirit of the individual who, in every practice and game opportunity, competes at her fullest potential. Cataldo was a very strong defensive player for the Bison this season and saw action in all of the 17 games in which she played, and recorded one defensive save.
Jordan, a 2005 co-captain, received the Elizabeth Goodall Award for Merit, recognizing the true spirit of the individual who, through an impeccable work ethic, is driven to excel in the sport of field hockey. Jordan finished the 2005 season leading the Patriot League in saves (190) and save percentage (.819), and was ranked third in the nation in both categories. She received All-Patriot League First-Team honors, was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Year, received All-Mideast Region Second-Team honors, was named an ECAC All-Star and was given the opportunity to play in the NFHCA North/South All-Star Game for her efforts this season. Jordan, who is ranked eighth in the Patriot League for career saves with 475, also received the team's award in 2003 and is a past member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
O'Brien, the co-captain with Jordan, was awarded the Sally Keith Award for Character, which recognizes the individual who, through her personality and determination, provides leadership and strength to all of her teammates. She finished the 2005 season second on the squad with eight goals scored, recording two assists for a total of 18 points. O'Brien, a 2003 second team All-Patriot League selection and a past member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the NFHCA All-Academic Squad, completed her career for the Orange and Blue ranking fifth in career goals with 28.
Hoffman received the final award of 2005 - the Carolyn Zesk Award for Academic Excellence - recognizing the true spirit of the individual who, through perseverance, diligence and flexibility, excels in both academics and athletics. Hoffman, both a past member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the NFHCA National Academic Squad, saw action in 16 games and started in 13 this season, recording three goals for six points. Hoffman was forced to sit out two games due to injury, but battled back to reclaim her starting spot this season.
Bucknell finished the season 8-10 overall, 4-1 in regular season conference play, for a second place finish in the Patriot League. In the league tournament, the Bison fell to Holy Cross, 3-1, in the semifinals.
