BALTIMORE, Md. - Ian Rawhauser (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) won the 100-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay team swam its season-best time of 3 minutes, 12.05 seconds, but the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team fell to UMBC Saturday at UMBC Natatorium. The Retrievers (4-3) defeated the Bison (1-2) 142-94.
Rawhauser, who also teamed with John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) on the 400 relay squad that finished .64 seconds behind UMBC in second place, won the 100 free in 47.62, just .17 shy of his season best.
The Bison also had success in the 400 medley relay as they claimed third and fourth. The third-place squad of Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Hanover), Bennett, Steadman and Rawhauser also set a season-best time of 3:33.95, nearly two seconds better than the previous season best.
Bennett also achieved a season best in the 50 free by crossing the line fourth in 22.65. Steadman took second in the race, timing in at 22.24.
William Schilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) also set a season best by finishing fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.68.
Bucknell's diving squad had a strong showing behind UMBC's junior Jeff Salgado who broke his own school record in the one-meter diving event (312.45). Salgado also won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 285.23. However, Bucknell swept the second through fifth positions off the one-meter board, while it took second through sixth off the three-meter. Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington), who tallied a 238.27 off the one-meter and a 252.30 off the three-meter, led the Bison contingent, while Jeff Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll) took third each time.
Bucknell is idle until Jan. 7 when it takes on Western Kentucky and Providence in Ft. Myers, Fla.
