LEWISBURG, Pa. - The 2005 Patriot League Champion Bucknell women's soccer team will travel to State College, Pa., to face Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Women's College Cup Tournament, the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Selection Committee announced on Monday afternoon. The match will take place on Friday, Nov. 11, at Jeffery Field at 5 p.m. West Virginia and Hofstra will square off in the second game at 7:30 p.m.
"We anticipated drawing Penn State, it makes sense," said Bucknell head coach Ben Landis. "We take it as a compliment to be playing one of the best teams in the country. Representing the Patriot League in the NCAA Tournament is the highest prize any team in our conference can achieve. I think our team represented Bucknell extremely well this past weekend and we look forward to the opportunity to showcase our fine student-athletes on a national level in the NCAAs."
The Bison are 11-8-1 on the season and earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Army on Sunday in the Patriot League Championship. Penn State is 19-0-1 on the season and was ranked No. 1 in the nation over the past month. The Lions are coming off their eighth-straight Big Ten regular season championship and are making their 11th-consecutive NCAA appearance.
Bucknell is 0-9-0 in program history against Penn State since the teams first met in 1994. In the squad's first and only other trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Bison suffered a 3-1 loss against the Nittany Lions. The last time the teams played on Sept. 14, 2004, the Orange and Blue fell by a 5-0 margin.
Tickets for the match will be available at the gate and will be $7 for adults and $3 for youth, student and senior citizen tickets.
