WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite an early lead in the first half, the Bucknell field hockey team was unable to hold on as it ended its season today with a 3-1 loss against the number three seed Holy Cross at the Patriot League tournament in the semi-finals, at the William I Jacobs Recreation Complex, in Washington, D.C. The Bison, the number two seed, beat the Crusaders in a 3-2 overtime victory in a previous match-up this season.
With just over fifteen minutes in the game, senior Kelly O'Brien (Rye, N.Y./Rye) drove in a pass from junior Anne Lutz (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) to find a wide-open Holy Cross net for the first goal of the contest. Less than two minutes later, the Holy Cross matched O'Brien's score with a tally of their own from Sara O'Coin.
Junior Katie Urosevich (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) had a breakaway with 30 seconds left in the half, but her shot was stopped by the Crusader's netminder, Sony Kuhn. The score was left in a 1-1 tie at the end of the first half.
With the goal wide open, freshman Steph Graf (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks East) made a fantastic diving defensive save to temporarily save the game for the Bison, but Holy Cross took charge in the second half as Jenna Cook caught Bucknell's goalie, senior Liz Jordan (Townson, Md./St. Paul's), off guard and buried in a tally to take a 2-1 lead with less than seven minutes left in the game.
At the 66:21 minute mark, Laura Cohen scored off a penalty stroke, to push the Crusaders ahead of Bucknell 3-1. The Bison gave a valiant effort, but were unable to meet the Holy Cross lead.
O'Brien finished the season leading the squad with eight goals, while Jordan, recently announced as the league's Goalkeeper of the Year, finished the season leading the PL with 190 saves and a save percentage of .819.
Bucknell finished the 2005 season with an overall record of 8-10, 4-1 (second place in the PL) in regular season play, and 0-1 in the Tournament.
