ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell men's soccer team closed out its 2005 campaign with a 2-2 double overtime tie against Navy at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility Saturday night. The Bison, who entered the match needing a win and a result other than a tie in Saturday night's Lafayette-Lehigh game to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, fell short of the postseason for the first time since 2002.
Bucknell jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead against Navy, which was officially eliminated from postseason consideration with Colgate's 1-0 win over Holy Cross earlier in the day. The Mids answered with two goals of their own in the second half, including a header by Carter Stapleton with 2:57 left in regulation that tied the score at 2-2.
For the second consecutive game senior Tim Faneck (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) and sophomore Joe Mellott (Highland, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) hooked up for a Bison goal. Faneck, who finished the season tied with classmate Eric Brunton for the team lead with three goals, headed in the goal off a free kick from Mellott at the 19:52 mark.
With just under 12 minutes to play in the first half the Bison took a 2-0 lead on an own goal by Navy. It was just the second time this season Bucknell has tallied two goals with the other coming in a 2-0 win over Holy Cross.
The Mids stormed back in the second half with a pair of goals to send the game into overtime. The first score came just 5:41 into the stanza when Addy Strasdas tallied his fourth goal of the season by kicking in a rebound off an Adam Edwards' (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) save. Stapleton then headed in his game-tying goal to send the game to overtime.
The two 10-minute overtime periods featured each team attempting five shots, but neither could find the back of the net. Edwards, who finished his career with a Patriot League-record 27 shutouts, made three of his six saves during the overtime periods.
Bucknell nearly took a 3-0 advantage into the intermission, but Aric McElheny stopped Scott Visnic (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) on a breakaway in the final minutes of the first half.
The contest featured seven yellow cards, including four on Bucknell. Navy, which outshot the Bison 16-15, was whistled for 27 of the 43 fouls in the match.
Bucknell finished the 2005 season with an 8-6-4 overall record and tied Navy for fifth place in the Patriot League with a 3-3-1 conference mark. It is the first time the Bison have won at least seven games in four consecutive seasons since 1973 to 1976. The Mids completed their season with an 8-6-2 record.
