LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving squads will open the 2005-06 season at home this weekend as the teams will play host to the Bucknell Damon's Sprint Invitational this Saturday, Nov. 5, with the morning session beginning at 11 a.m. and the afternoon session starting at 4 p.m. The Bison will be competing against American, La Salle, and Villanova on the men's side, while the women will take on American, La Salle and Saint Francis (Pa.).
Senior Lauren Reed (South Plainfield, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy), a double-winner at last year's Sprint Invitational, is among the Bucknell women's returnees. She was the lone Bison woman to take top honors in two individual swimming events at the meet last year, capturing first in the 50 and 100-yard butterfly events.
Erika Mannix (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro) came away with wins in both diving events at the 2004 Sprint Invitational as a freshman and will look to do the same as a sophomore. Mannix enters this season after a stellar rookie campaign in which she set two Bucknell records, tied a third and represented the Orange and Blue at the NCAA Zone "A" Diving Championships.
Junior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) took top honors in the 100 free at and senior Lectie Altman (Syracuse, N.Y./William Nottingham) recorded second place finishes in the 100 back and 50 back at the meet last season. Both athletes capped off last year with double-gold performances at the 2005 Patriot League Championships. Altman also competed at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif., this past August.
In addition, Bucknell returns the 400 medley relay team of Altman, Reed, Scheffter, and sophomore Emily Wichryk (Darlington, Pa/Blackhawk) that finished first at last year's Sprint Invitational.
On the men's side, senior Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) won both diving events at the meet a year ago and will begin his final season with the Bison this Saturday. Freeman holds three school records and medaled in the one-meter at the 2005 Patriot League Championships.
Sophomores John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), Bradford Bennett (Harlesyville, Pa./Souderton Area) and junior Ian Rawhauser (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), the top finishers for the Bison men in the individual swimming events at the 2004 Sprint Invitational, all return for 2005-06. Peterman finished second in the 50 free last year and third in the 100 free, while Bennett finished third in the 50 breast and Rawhauser took third in the 50 free.
Bennett and Peterman, along with returning senior Todd Bauer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) were a part of Bucknell's second-place 200 free relay team at the meet a year ago. Rawhauser, senior William Schilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and senior Mark Kretzer (Northport, N.Y./Harborfields) will be in action for the Bison again this season and were members of the team's 200 medley relay squad that finished second at the 2004 Sprint Invitational. Bennett Peterman and Rawhauser also helped the Orange and Blue to a second place finish in the 400 medley relay at last year's meet as well.
