NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Iona used a 29-11 run over the game's final 10 minutes to defeat the Bucknell women's basketball team Sunday afternoon at the Mulcahy Center. Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River), Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) and Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) led the Bison with 12 points apiece.
The game remained close as neither team built a lead larger than seven points in the first 30 minutes of play, but a key 10-0 run, highlighted by nine points in less than a minute from Joanne Smith and Toni Horvath, gave the Gaels a 56-47 advantage and Bucknell never drew closer than seven points after that. The 17-point final margin was the largest of the contest for Iona.
In a back-and-forth first half, Iona used an 8-0 run to take a 13-6 lead with 13:49 to play, but a 3-pointer by Lauren Schober ended a scoreless drought of more than three minutes for the Bison. She then picked up the second foul of the half on Iona's 6-5 center Martina Weber on a driving layup following an offensive rebound by Hollobaugh. Schober, who tied Champion for team-high honors with eight first-half points, converted the free throw.
Bucknell, which made nine 3-pointers in the contest, including six in the first half, tied the game at 15-15 on Hollobaugh's first of three 3-pointers in the game with 10:03 to play.
The teams stayed close the rest of the half, although the Bison opened up their biggest lead of the first half (32-27) on a 3-pointer by Champion from the right wing 33 seconds before intermission. Bucknell led 33-29 at halftime.
In the opening minutes of the second half Bucknell could not stretch its lead out past six despite a Hope Foster's (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) first basket of the game and 3-pointers by Hollobaugh and Sprouse.
Iona took its first lead since the first half on a 3-pointer from Melissa Yeagley with 15:35 to play to give the Gaels a 42-41 advantage.
The Bison would lead just one more time (47-46) after a pair of free throws from Schober, before Iona went on its decisive 10-0 run. The Bison went more than 5:30 without a field goal during the run.
Bucknell shot just 28.4 percent, although it did make 9 of 22 from 3-point range. The nine 3-pointers were more than the Bison made in any game a year ago. Hollobaugh, Champion and Kristina Collymore (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) each made more than one 3-pointer. Iona was 7 of 12 from behind the arc with Horvath scoring all 12 of her points on 4 of 5 3-point shooting.
Foster, who faced a tall Iona frontline, led the Bison with eight rebounds, while Hollobaugh, Schober and Amanda Brown each contributed seven. However, Bucknell was outrebounded 51-38 as Regan Pettijohn led the Gaels with 16 boards, including six on the offensive end. Weber hauled in just three to go along with her team-high 16 points. Each team hauled in 19 rebounds.
Bucknell opens its home campaign Tuesday night at Sojka Pavilion against Coppin State. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
