Bucknell's Women's Cross Country Team Places Fifth at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Bucknell's women's cross country team tied with Maryland for fifth place in a pool of 26 teams at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, held on Saturday, in Bethlehem, Pa. The men finished 15th out of 28 schools. Princeton won the women's race, while Georgetown won it for the men.
Winning the six-kilometer women's race was Cack Ferrell of Princeton in 19 minutes and 58.3 seconds. Leading the Bison was junior Jenny Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley), who finished eleventh overall, with a time of 21:04.3, just missing a qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships by 20 seconds.
Second on the squad was junior Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa./Forest Hills), in 33rd place (21:39.5), while fellow junior Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) finished third for Bucknell (42nd overall, 21:52.5).
Rounding out the Bison's scorers were senior Kayla Halloran (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) and junior Lauren Bricker (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), who finished fourth and fifth for the Orange and Blue, 47th and 54th overall, with times of 21:55.9 and 22:06.8, respectively.
For the men, Georgetown's Fleet Hower was the victor on the 10K trail, with a total time of 30:03.8. For Bucknell, once again, junior Matt Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell) was the team's leader with a 54th place finish and a time of 31:51.8.
Sophomore Michael Gibney (Wading River, Shoreham Wading River) finished second for the Orange and Blue and 72nd overall (32:16.3), as senior Kevin Fortkiewicz (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) claimed the team's number three spot, for an 80th place finish overall (32:26.6).
Juniors Chris Norcea (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) and Derrin Pierret (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) were the last of the Bison scorers with 91st and 95th place finishes and times of 32:38.8 and 32:43.1, respectively.
The Regionals were held on the same course the Bucknell women won the Patriot League Championships on just two weeks ago.
The Bison will wrap-up their 2005 season at the IC4A Championships on Saturday, November 19.
