LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Englishtown) netted her team-high 10th goal of the year for the only score as the Bucknell women's soccer team defeated Lafayette 1-0 Friday night at Varsity Soccer Field for its first Patriot League win of the season. The Bison improved to 7-6-0, 1-1-0 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards fell to 1-7-3, 0-2-0 in league play.
The game, which was played in a constant heavy rain, was delayed 30 minutes to allow standing water to be cleared from the corner of the field.
Margolis' goal came in the 25th minute off a corner kick. Sophomore Leslie Schulze, who took a majority of Bucknell's season-high 15 corner kicks, found classmate Krista Lee Gentile (Haledon, N.J./Immacualte Heart Academy) in front of the goal. Gentile headed the ball over the head of Lafayette goalkeeper Mary Kate Erdman, who came out of the goal in an attempt to intercept the corner kick, to Margolis, who headed the ball into the empty net. Margolis has a Patriot League-most 10 goals this season. She also jumped into sixth place on Bucknell's career points list with 45 as she passed Amy Riviere and Savannah Rennels.
Despite battling the wet conditions, the Bison offense dominated the game as it launched 14 shots compared to Lafayette's four. The Bison also won the corner kick battle 15-4.
Bucknell had chances to add to its lead late in each half, but came up short each time. Just moments after entering the game with 12 minutes left in the first half Kimberly Cannon (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) fired a line drive from the middle of the field just inside the box that Erdman had to dive to her left to stop. Five minutes later senior Kerry Fitz-Patrick attempted a diving header after a cross from senior Margaret Emmitt (Oldwick, N.J./Gill Saint Bernards) that went just to the right of the post.
With just under nine minutes left in the second half Margolis nearly netted her second goal of the game. Gentile tracked down a free kick on the right side of the goal and served a cross to Margolis. She fired a shot that sailed just high and wide of the right side of the goal.
On the defensive side of the field, junior Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) was called upon to make just one save in goal for Bucknell. Erdman made two saves for the Leopards, who were held without a goal for the ninth straight contest.
The Bison return to action Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. against Patriot League foe Lehigh. That match will also be played at Varsity Soccer Field.
